Property Tax Deferment Program

A loans program available to eligible B.C. homeowners that allows them to defer their current-year property taxes.

When a property is approved for the property tax deferment program, the Ministry of Finance pays the property taxes after the tax due date and places a restrictive lien on the property. This means the types of changes that can be made to the property title are limited while the property is in the tax deferment program. Any necessary changes to the property title should be completed before an application is submitted.

Simple interest is charged on the deferred tax amount starting from the date the property taxes are due or the date the deferment application is submitted, whichever is later. Learn how interest is applied to a tax deferment loan.

Individuals may be eligible for the property tax deferment program if they qualify for the:

Regular program (for people who are 55 or older, are a surviving spouse or a person with disabilities), or
Families with children program
