There are two types of abortion available in BC:
  • aspiration (sometimes called surgical or procedural abortion)
  • medication (sometimes called medical abortion or the abortion pill). It is a good idea to look at some information about the differences between the two before booking an appointment. Some things might surprise you!
You can find more information here, and you can use this decision aid to help you decide on which type of abortion makes sense for you based on the date of your last period.

In BC, someone can access an abortion through abortion clinics and some family doctors, nurse practitioners, gynecologists, and hospitals:
  • With abortion clinics, a doctor’s referral is not required. Someone who has had a positive pregnancy test can just call to make an appointment. They may be required to have an ultrasound, which the clinic can either do or arrange for them to have one done. Waiting time for a clinic abortion may vary between about one and three weeks.
  • With other kinds of abortion providers, a doctor’s referral may be required. If you do not have a prochoice doctor, an Options for Sexual Health clinic may be help you with a referral. You can see Options for Sexual Health clinics near you here.

CAUTION
Some groups opposed to abortion offer pregnancy counselling using misleading language to make you think you will get accurate information on all your choices and rights. Their purpose is to talk you out of the option of abortion, and to do so they may use false information about the effects of abortion, ignore your rights, and apply religious pressure. Such groups include Birthright, Pregnancy Options Society (formerly known as the Crisis Pregnancy Centre), Hope for Women, and Pro Life BC, which is using an “OptionsBC” web site.
